Things To DoArts & Crafts

The island plays host to a number of excellent arts & crafts producers, some of which form the Stronsay Craft Trail.

These include Marion Miller Jewellery, the place to go for unique and unusual hand-crafted silver and gemstone jewellery. Airy Fairy is renowned locally for colourful personalised baby quilts, gifts and children’s clothes, while Orkney Star Island Soap specialises in natural soaps and balms infused with a little of what they call ‘island magic’ and hand-spun yarns and textiles. Selkie Glass is fast gaining renown for fused and stained glass work, as is the Wyrd Weaver for beautifully handwoven rustic folk-art textiles and whimsical characters.

Housed in an old chapel built in 1837 and overlooking St Catherine’s Bay, Craftship Enterprise is the island’s craft hub. Facilities include a large workshop studio, a Craft Shop stocked full of craft supplies, kits and books. There is free Wi-Fi and visitor information with local maps in the studio.

Craftship owner, Dianne Riley-Moore and several of the makers on the craft trail run workshops throughout the year in the large studio, helping locals and visitors master a wide range of crafts, including origami, decoupage, iris folding, stitch a line and die cutting, which Dianne herself specialises in for her range of handmade greeting cards, pictures and home and wedding decorations. Visitors of all ages can join in these workshops. Beginners welcome! The Craftship can also arrange crafting holidays, where you can try a range of island crafts while discovering the “Island of the Bays".
